bonjour, oui, cafe, merci

Simply because it entertains me, I was able to have an entire meal (breakfast in the hotel) sans speaking a single word in English. Granted, I wasn't waxing poetic on the differences between Jean-Luc Picard and Jean-Claude Van Damm, but still, I spoke a heck of a lot more French (and was far less obnoxious) than the (oh, so obviously) American couple who barely even acknowledged the waitress, and when they did it was to proclaim that they don't speak French (and giving their unstated opinion of the qualities of that language).

Dammit; how hard is it to understand "Bonjour"? We're in Quebec, not France. If you reply back "good morning" they can speak English! Amazing! It's like they know more than one language or something.
